Fit the new place before you book the van
Downsizing in Guildford might mean a flat in the town centre, a bungalow, or a smaller house in Cranleigh or Park Barn. The mistake is moving the old house into rooms that will not take it. Measure the large pieces against the new doors, especially if you are leaving a wide landing for a cottage stair or a lift.
Flat removals are the right brief when the new home is an apartment. A bungalow can still be a full house move. Say which.
What to release first
Wardrobes you will not rebuild, duplicate kitchenware, and furniture that only fitted the old room. Charity shops in town take what they can sell, not everything. Guildford’s recycling centre at Slyfield, and Cranleigh’s centre if you are to the south, publish what they accept and which days they open. Vans are not allowed at every site.
Keep paperwork, photographs and one comfortable chair until the end. Those are the things people regret sending off in a rush.
Packing a smaller load
You may still want help with the kitchen and the glass. The packing service can cover those rooms while you box the rest. Label by the new room, not the old one. “Back bedroom” is useless if the new home has one bedroom.
Access on the day
A smaller home is not always an easier carry. Town-centre flats and retirement developments often have a booked lift and a time limit. Village bungalows can have a long path. Tell the crew. Insurance is provided. Ask what is covered for the pieces you are keeping, and get a free quote once the “not coming” pile has actually left.
